First Survey Evaluation

My survey showed that females take more of an interest in fashion and that 63.6% filled it in, not missing one question. This helped me finalise my idea that I’m designing clothes only for women. I did predict that teenagers would be the age that did my survey the most and I was right, 90.9% ticked that they’re in there teenage years. The majority of people stated that the label didn’t matter and that high street clothes are there preferred option, and even if they were to buy designer clothes it wouldn’t be mainly because of the label; this made me question though why would you spend so much money on something that you could buy high street if its not for the label?
63.6% of people believed that the media is fashions biggest influence and that they are most inspired by what celebrities are wearing. Something that is a negative out of this is that 90.9% agreed that there is pressure from the media to keep up with fashion and to stay in trend, I don’t think this is right at all and although the truth Is believable I think its sad to face that at such a young age people have so much pressure on just there appearance. The poll proved that magazines are the most popular form of media that fashion is published in and that designers vary for popularity. My last question that proved people follow trends is when Indie came out at the top with 81.8% it is clear what look the majority of people go for in this day and trend.

Fashion Industry Research and Case Study

Job Roles

Fashion Designer - This job is all about bringing out the latest trends, knowing the know how about fashion and all the background knowledge and then building on it to make new inventions in fashion. They create new clothes by styling and making them, it can be a whole collection or simply just an item look shoes or jewellery. This role is quite an important one and takes more than one person to be involved in order for it to run as smoothly as it possibly could.

Fashion Journalism- This is one of the most popular jobs these days because blogs have become such a big thing in the industry and they are almost a compulsory type of role that comes with the job. Researching it there is a lot of jobs available and not much experience is needed and this nowadays has become a key part of students entering the fashion world; it’s certainly a step in the right direction.

Business Management- This is the main job not just for the fashion world but also for any in general because without management in a company, it would collapse. The key roles of the management would mainly involve telling every one else what to do, where to be and keeping everyone on schedule. If any one is to give a bad name to the company they’re the ones that are always responsible for taking the blame as they are in charge and expected to. They put their name on the line for others in order to make sure that everyone is achieving the maximum they possibly can. The main power they gain with the job inn hand is the control to finalise everything; in the fashion world they would finalise a collection or a magazine cover.

Styling- This is one of the jobs that really appeals to me, I like the creativity and flair that goes in to the job and the main thing that is eye catching about the role is its all about opinions; nothing is ever wrong in the fashion world so this can be step through the door. After researching this, the thing that popped up most about the job was that it’s all about the contacts and the people you get to know in the business.

Case Study

Mary Katrantzou is labelled for her bold graphics on the designs and industrial jewellery that are bold statement pieces; her collections are always right on trend and manage to capture the beauty of a ladies body. In my opinion she always aims her collections at the younger generation like the majority of designers because its all about getting your work out there and the young generation that are always appearing in magazines are going to be the ones captured in the clothes and accessories. Like all designers she has her influences like Coco Chanel and Balenclaga this is what inspired her when she was at fashion colleges in America. Although she is a solo designer she collaborated with Sophia Kokosalaki and Bill Bass and other designers, this gives a new edge to her work so that it isn’t the same old collection every season and also then gets her label out in the fashion industry that bit extra. Although she’s Greek and lived in America she has mentioned in previous interviews that she loves the London life and enjoys living and working there. She claims that it has great energy for fashion and that there are always new trends to be intrigued by. Her work is now global reaching out to all the majors stores like Harrods; her career so far hasn’t been that long and she’s always aiming to do more and more but up to now she has achieved so much to say how hard the industry is to get in to.

Fashion Template

Surprisingly it took me a while to find a suitable template to draw my four designs on because I wanted a simple one that didn't have detail on the face or torso.
Having these printed now make me so excited to draw up my designs because I have so many different ideas that I can't wait to be put down on paper!

Evaluation of the past weeks work. 9th November

For the past week I have being searching the Internet and magazines, I have found some really individual outfits that have really helped me come along with my project as inspiration. So making the mood board to have this all in front of me at any time I want is really helpful to improve my ideas. I created a mind map describing the content of what I need to do in order to succeed, all the materials and equipment that I need for the photo shoot to go smoothly and the inspiration I have gained from fashion week, different designers and themes that entwined with my work. I did create a collage of different backdrops to consider different scenes on the photo shoot but I stuck with my original idea of a grey background to give it that edgy, editorial effect which I am happy with. I do most defiantly feel ready to start my work on creating the outfits because I feel as prepared as I most possibly could.

Treatment

At first my idea was to create roughly fifteen dresses, no accessories, no shoes just dresses but i decided this was way too much work to take knowing the time we had it and after knowing its a third of the grade and not more. My idea now that i am deffinatly settleing on is to make four dresses with accessories to match such as shoes and and bags. I want each outfit to connect to the next one but i want them all to be very inividual and spectacular. One key part of my designs is i want them to fit in with the key trends like block coloring and fringing so that maybe they could be seen to fit in, in the fashion world. My first dress that has being the most exciting one to design and put ideas together is the one i intend on creating based one condom wrappers; i am going to base this on a dress that is already made from the highstreet and then attach each wrapper to create a block color effect for example the top half in orange and the rest in navy blue to show a strong contrast. I am going to make this a lot more intresting by adding a bag and pair of heels both with diamontes covering them, also the basic product bought from the high street with the detail added by me. My second dress will be already in tack and i am going to add the detail with layers of feathers creating a brand new look! I will match this up with accessories detailed with buttons of all shapes, sizes and colours; giving it this seasons look. One huge thing that has hit the majority of fashion houses is fringing and i new i deffinatly wanted to add this in to mine; so i'm going to make a dress from caset tape, layer by layer, based yet again on another dress like all of my peices. This will be paired with acessories made from bottle tops. My collection wouldn't be complete without a newspaper dress, although this has being done before i'm going to give it a vintage look by dipping the paper in tea bags. To top it off i'm going to make ribbon accessories. I am very happy with my ideas and i'm eager to succeed in this!

Mary Katrantzou

This is one of the main fashion houses that is a big influence towards me and the type of work i am going to be creating. This is her 2009 collection and in my opinion the best one she's created so far. I love the link between all the looks and the bold make up gives dramatic effect which matches with the bottom half layer of the simple black tights.

The Fashion Industry

I only used one source for researching the fashion industry and that was internet, I did attempt to look at books in the college library but was never successful in finding any resources on paper. I did find it really difficult in finding out the roles because a lot of places I looked had different opinions on the difference in roles, for example management wasn’t always seen as one of the most important jobs but yet on other website it was claimed the one that held the company together. I took my own take on all of the jobs because I decided to make them more of an opinion as to what there are seen like for an outsiders perspective. Once I got in to the hang of each individual role it opened my eyes a lot more in to the jobs out there for me after I finish university so i feel like this task majorly helped me.

Existing Products Evaluation

Researching existing products has being the most hopefully piece of work i have produced so far this year. It has helped me finalise my ideas by seeing whats in trend and with London fashion week taken place in the latest month everything in high fashion magazines and online blogs and websites couldn't be more helpful with such a wide range of variety! It was simple to know where to look but because there is so much out there i really had to narrow down my research pages so that i could make my chosen ones more detailed. I used images that help builed up what i want mine to look like. For example i researched a lot in to other designers so that i would have more knowledge on how a collection is brought together to look like a whole piece and although i didn't find many pieces that represented what i aim to represent i took the positives out of this and realised that mine could be if it goes to plan quite an original collection. Dolce & Gabbana is probably the fashion house that i can relate to the most because they have a very simple look that is linked with one or to garments, just like what i aim mine to be like; not read between the lines but linked between the lines! The thing i found most looking in to fashion more was that the thing that makes you stand out the most now is being different, it's not always about the setting or the backdrop, it could be just plain grey.. it is all about the unque look of the model and that in my opinion is what sets the mood, not the surroundings. After realising this i knew exactly what i wanted the dresses like so thought what would help me out the most would be to decide on hair and makeup. It did take a while because i knew what type of look i wanted to create and was stubborn not to budge my idea. I backed it up with images of two models with slicked back hair, i decided this because it makes a very bold look but won't draw the attention away from the dresses and accessories im in the process of making! Im producing these pages in my A3 folder and giving them a very profesional look because throughout my work i will keep on referring back to them.

Friday 30 September 2011

I started to get behind with my FMP because although i have done four ways of existing products i changed my mind on the amount off dresses i want to produce, so I'm having to go back through my work and change the proposal.
